If you're a fan of locally grown produce and roadside vegetable stands, you might be interested in the latest attempt by House Damnocrats to steal your liberty in the name of "food safety":
HR875 - take a second to contact your Congress Critter and tell them NO!!! I'd be really surprised if anyone in Oklahoma voted for this (well, I wouldn't be surprised if Dan Boren voted for it - he seems a little out of touch), but they need to know that we oppose it, and they need to be encouraged to actively work to gain opposition for it. Otherwise, they might think we don't really care and let it slide through.

I heard about this recently and was horrified at what I heard - one thing being that we might not even be able to grow organic gardens in our back yards and that evil Monsanto was going to take over all our food production! I did a search and came up with this: http://crooksandliars.com/nonny-mouse/monsanto-and-hr-875-take-two. I'm hoping everyone blew things out of proportion and it's not what people have been worried about. We should definitely keep our eyes on HR875 though.
Thanks for the link, April.
I do find the proposals in HR875 disturbing, and, for the record, I also oppose NAIS. I understand, as Amato iterates, that the bill has "nothing to do with Monsanto." It does, however, have a very broad category the includes anyone who stores and transports foods for retail sale. There go the local farmers' markets. With stiff penalties and fines levied on any producer who doesn't follow the rigid standards of record keeping and reporting, the small farmers will go down. This certainly doesn't hurt Monsanto. Couple that with the threat of GMO single generation seeds and/or plants, and we're effectively screwed in the food department.
Sadly, the sitting President and administration and demonstrated a keen interest in increasing that control. Tying up the food production with hefty rules and regulations is an effective way to increase the dependence of the people on government. Doing it in the name of "safety" just plain sucks.
Maybe it won't pass. I certainly pray it doesn't. I don't, however, think we should rest on that assumption.
Why can't they leave things alone? All this makes me so tired.
