Friday Follies

Last Night's Storm was more than I bargained for. I thought we were going to miss the worst of it, but just West of us it got its second wind (pun?) and really gave us a scare. We got the weather alert that a tornado warning was issued about 11:40 last night. The hot spot was west of Winchester, and radar showed a tornado east of Slick. Where do we live? West of Winchester and east of Slick. When it hit us, we lost power (and subsequently weather reports). We can normally pick up channel 6 on the radio, but last night the Oasis radio station decided to blast over the weather report.

When I could hear the talking weather heads, this is what I heard: "The strongest rotation is here, with possible rotation here and here, and the wind front extends down to here."

Where the blue blazes is Here???

Alatariel was near hysteria and I was none too comfy sitting in my trailer house waiting for the top to pop. Yeah, we have hurricane straps, but I don't want to see if they work.

I was ready to head for the neighbor's storm cellar (which is full of boxes and plastic banana trees), but Hubby kept telling me to just wait. He watched from the front door (waiting for that tornado to come up the drive?) until the front passed through some 15 minutes later.

All I know is, I was NOT happy waiting to see if a tornado was going to take us out. We live on a hill, and there is no low place to take cover without heading for places afar.

By next spring I will have a fraidy hole!

Frugal today? Maybe just a bit. I managed to say "no" several times to Ala at the grocery store today when she asked for non-necessities. She gave me puppy-dog eyes, but I stood firm. It's half-way through the pay period and I've yet to have the usual big biweekly grocery bill. When apples and nectarines are nudging $2 a pound, it really makes me conserve on other things in order to have the fresh fruit. Ala likes the Asian pears, but I couldn't spring for even one at $2.69 each.

I wanted to cruise on up to the Fairgrounds and visit the quilt show, but seeing that gas took a twelve cent jump today, I decided to keep my business closest to home. Paying $3.79 a gallon for gas makes Asian pears look cheap.

I did have to turn down the AC in the house. It was just too humid to keep it at 75 and do much moving around. One degree was all it came down, but it made a world of difference.

Wow that was scary. I'm glad it missed you. I would definitly have a storm cellar or one of those safe rooms. Our Park has 2 storm cellars but Scruffy is not allowed so we go to the church. The older part of the church is built with reinforced concrete walls. It may not stand up to an F5 but I think it'll withstand most other things.

Glad to hear y'all are doing ok after all of the storms we've had this past week (6 months actually). I say enough with the storms already! I'm sure you agree.

I'm sorry you had such a scare. This weather hasn't been fun at all. Are you getting the wind like we are?

I love the storms until they start dropping funnels. The wind was phenomenal! 60-70 mph. No telling how many of our roof shingles are laying around the countryside!
