When I first began my redecorating adventure, all I was going to do was paint the walls. Remember the walls? You can click on any photo for a super-dooper enlargement.
Rather than tape of the windows and doors before painting, the previous/previous owners put trim around everything... EVERYthing! to hide the line of demarcation. Doors, ceiling, baseboards, stairs, all surrounded by 1" trim..... not even a pretty job, I might add. More like: Just get it close and that's good enough. Gaps, misaligned pieces, gaps.... did I mention gaps? Horrible.
Click on the first photo and take a look at the windows. You'll see what I mean.
I started covering the red walls with primer last weekend. Hubby went along with me today to take care of the duties requiring ladder climbing. He started with priming along the ceiling next to the gaping crown mold-ing. After about three walls, he, too, started complaining about the lousy carpentry job they'd done. We started ripping it down. He also took down the 2x4 board shelves that were attached to the tops of the windows. Last week I removed all the 1" trim that surrounded all the windows and baseboards.
The stuff around the ceiling was about 4" wide. Taking it down gave the room the feeling of really high ceilings. They're 9.5' high. Now they feel 9.5' high.
Now you see it...... Now you don't!
When I pulled the trim from around the windows, I discovered some really nice looking frames.
The trim pieces hid the detail of the window and door frames. I like them much better without the trim. By the way.... can you see the colors that the trim was hiding? The room was orange before it was red.
I never do things the easy way. I didn't decide to pull off all the trim until Day 2, after I'd primed most of the living room. When I started ripping the strips off, the latex paint on the window and door frames came with it. Underneath is some really nice varnished wood. DD was enjoying picking paint off today. Can't really see the detail of the wood, but it's nice!
We also slapped some primer on the breakfast room walls after removing the mantel-turned-shelf that was hanging on the wall.
Last but not least, DD's room..... Before.....
And after three (count 'em 1,2,3) coats of primer to cover the dark charcoal walls and one coat of "Billowing Clouds" top coat..... still have some painting to do around the top, add the second coat, and she's ready to move in.
We'll be back at it next weekend. Anyone want to come paint???

Wow! I thought those rooms looks pretty darned good with the dark red and snowy white trim. I can't believe they did such a sorry job of painting! I know you'll be so glad when this is all done! Can't quite tell what color billowing clouds is (looks white), but it sure looks way better than that black w/red trim wall! Nicely done! I'd come help you paint...but then you'd have to come help me, ok? LOL Not that we've had money to buy paint yet anyway...
Whew that's some weird choice of colors that you have to cover up. I think it will look really good when you're finished. I'd help but I'm allergic to work.
