Treasures

Quilts from MIL

Nine patch made by MIL's mother (Hub's grandma). The purple is the dominant color to my eye, so it looks like an Irish chain to me.
The quilt had never been finished, so she took it down the lane to a lady who has a quilting machine and advertises machine quilting. She did such a crapped up job on this quilt! She needs to have her quilting machine revoked!

Double Wedding Ring made by Step-FIL's mother. Its never been finished, either. MIL added batting and backing, pinned, and started hand-quilting it, but didn't finish it. Maybe some day Laurel and I will do it. That will make it a four-generation quilt. Unfortunately, it has some age spots on it. Patina, right?
I read something about putting an odd block in the corner of a quilt, but I can't recall the significance. I don't know if this was intended to be the odd block (it's not quite in the corner), or if she ran out of muslin and patched the block with something else!

MIL's mother made this from MIL's dresses she wore when growing up. It's finished, hand quilted, and has been used so much that the binding is tattered in spots. I don't know if I'll replace the binding or hang it as is.

Here's that odd block in the corner again.

MIL has also gifted me her Royal Albert Old Country Roses china. Her sister gave her the first place setting for Christmas in 1940. MIL bought the rest of the pieces, one at a time, until she had the complete set.

The step-FIL was kinda "out there" and Hubby didn't know why I would want the quilt that his mother made.

I've admired her china since the first time I had dinner at her house. I feel honored to have it!

Lovely! Supposedly the odd block is to show you aren't perfect and that only God is perfect. Quilters purposely built in "mistakes" to be humble. At least that's the story I've been told. ;)

I love the china. Gorgeous!
