For several days now, I've been investigating clothesline options. I used to have one, but it eventually rotted and fell apart. I've been running up the electric bill drying my clothes for years, now.
This effort rose from the realization that gas prices are going up at a rapid rate, and everything else will follow close behind. This includes the electric bill. We've already been mandated by the vet to keep the Yorkie with the collapsed trachea in a well cooled house so he can breathe easily. OK - chilling a 2100 sf house ain't cheap to start with. Keeping it cool enough so the Porkie Yorkie doesn't have labored breathing is gonna be a chunk o' change outta my pocket.
After dinner this evening, Hubby and I spent some time sitting in the front yard enjoying the mild country evening (with the exception of the idiot down the road racing his dirt bike - where's the box of nails when you need it?) when the conversation turned to emergency preparedness. Hubby asked if I was working toward anything in particular by my clothesline quest, or if I just wanted to dry clothes outside. That's when we started discussing the state of the Union, the price of gas and its influence on food and other goods. Case and point, Kleenex announced an 8% increase coming sometime this summer. Time to stockpile toilet paper.
We discussed options for water, food, and maintaining our daily existence in case of emergency. Hub wondered if he was being paranoid, thinking there might be issues brewing that could create problems. While it could be a little paranoid, I don't think there's anything wrong with being prepared. After all, weather can really stir things up. Electric grids can go down. It only takes one mindless quip by someone "famous" to start mass hysteria.
So we're making a fall back plan, just to say we're prepared for an emergency. After all, we live in the boonies and we depend on the availability of everything from the city. If we can't get there, we might just be SOL.
I'll keep you abreast of our plans and improvements as they come together.

I grew up hanging clothes on a clothesline. We didn't get a dryer until I was out of high school. I use a dryer all the tiime now but a clothesline would be nice except I think it would make my allergies worse, pollen on the clothes. I understand what you're saying about stocking up on things. We keep saying we're gonna do that but haven't gotten round to it yet.
Great minds think alike. I'd definitely be interested to hear what you do.
I feel for the people that just don't see how times are changing. They're going to be so surprised one of these days.
