Frugal Friday

Wow - this might be tough.

I bought no fabric today.

I checked the air in my tires and aired up the low one.

I found a Quik Trip gas pump today that was +5 for unleaded! Wow!

I paid bills and actually had money left over - weird.

I stopped using Oxy Clean and went back to using cheepo powdered dishwasher detergent. DWD is what I always used before Oxy came along, but that Billy Mays is such a smooth talker... I can get a large box of store brand DWD for under $2. The same amount of Oxy costs five times as much. It works just as well.

I tried Best Choice green beans last week - they fell quite short of name brand. Darn.

I bought groceries today and decided to try DelMonte spaghetti sauce at 99 cents a can compared to Ragu at a couple of dollars. I've never used DelMonte brand sauce. We'll see.

I also stayed away from the chip aisle, the cookie row, and the fast food aisle. I like to keep a small supply of emergency canned foods on hand, like dried beef, canned ravioli or Spam. (sidebar - Spam makes a mean ham salad spread for sandwiches) I can't get a can of SPAM for under two dollars! Floor-sweepings in a can for two bucks! Gee whiz!

My favorite: I use pre-folded cloth diapers for dish towels. They're very absorbent, double as hot pot holders, and last forever.

I detest store bought green beans. The quality just isn't there.

Have you given any thought to canning your own? It's not hard.

I think about it all the time! MIL has a canner that she offered me a few years back. I should go get it and actually can some. I have a pot of fresh (from Reasor's) green beans & ham cooling on the stove for tomorrow's dinner.

We like the Delmonte spaghetti sauce just fine. Sometimes I doctor it up with some extra spices and perhaps a can of crushed tomatoes or some chopped fresh tomatoes to freshen up the flavor. I use it as pizza sauce, too.

My best frugal habit is using my freezer for leftovers. Somehow that leftover stew tastes better in a couple of weeks, instead of day after day in the same week. I also save leftover "bits and pieces" in a ziploc in the freezer bag and put it all in a soup when I've collected enough. It's amazing what can taste good together.

Hi, Seabear!

I love my freezer. I try to cook ahead and freeze. I'm not great about it, but sometimes I do get motivated!
